Brain Evoked Response Test
Ever since 1987 as being confronted with deafness bas being involved through a studservice from our first dog Fairray Gallant Orange Baron we started tested our dogs. To avoid any misunderstandings we had Baron tested in Trier and he was found BAEr normal. Although the equipment for testing at this time was also available in Holland (Vetianiry University Hospital ' De Uithof in Utrecht) our request for testing our dogs was denied by professor Mrs. Venken Verhagen as she informed us , quote; ' We don't facilitate any comercial purposes ' as she qualified testing dogs and puppies for deafness as to be consdired to be ( her point of view) strictly ' Sales purposes .
Between 1989 and 1990 we made many phone calls, did a lot of research and investigation about this genetic desease in order to learn as much as possible but also to find a facility that not only could do this essential and for us without any doubt very necessary test was also willing to perform this test . Our special thanks goes to Dr. Strain who took the time to discus our possibilities and helped us finding a clinic that had the equipment and also allowed us to test our dogs.
We found a clinic in Germany located in the city of Trier and the vetiniarn Mrs. Marion Kornberg informed us that we are welcome with our dogs and although it mend long drives we decided to travel several times to Trier and have all our dogs and puppies tested for deafness. Out gratitude goes to Mrs. Kornberg for helping us and for understanding the importance knowing the result of each of our dogs whether to be used for breeding or not.
Between 1990-1992 we tested over 30 dogs (adults and puppies born) at her clinic un till a closer distance in Zeist, The Netherlands theVetianarian Mr. Nico Dijkshoorn started the first posibility to have dogs tested for deafness in our country.
We also considered this malfunction extremeley important to be recoginzed for a healthy breed population so we decided to only breed with Bi-Lateral normal and also to make it our policy not to grant or allow any breedings with our offspring or to give a studservices without making certain that dogs involved had acquired a offcial BEAR test result. allow and for the

1992: Tri color puppie BEAR tested at the clinic of Mrs. Kornberg, Trier ( Germany)
In 1988, unexpectley and not aware of we genetic hearing malfunctions we wear confronted with the inhertance desease that can causes deafness. For us health and correct personalities are and will always be thee most important thing that concern a breed. Exterior qualities are for the pleause of our eyes and results gaine at dogs shows good for our ego's but .......... Not knowng how hard it would be we got involved in a long time struggle for over a period of 13 years to try and convince the Dutch English Setter Club Board and members to improve/change their breeding regulations and also many European English Setter breeders to test their dogs for deafness before breeding and do the same with all of the offspring born.
