Showbench (Laverack type) versus Llewellin (Fieldtrial type)
There are many differences between these type of English Setter dogs when it concerns the exterior appearance as well many opions whether the so called Showbench type English Setters still has the correct hunting abilities to be able to work the field.
It is without any doubt, to us, that the Fieldtrial dogs maintained a better pure hunting instinct over the years which defintley disguishes them from the Showbench dogs although by size they are usually smaller and lower in height.
In Europe most of the fiedtrial type dogs do not qualify and meet the breed standard anymore as set by the country of origine Great Britain.
Since we have seen our dogs chase the birds in the meadow (not like they supposed to do in correct way as expected to perform in the field ) we always had our thoughts and did wonder how our dogs would perform when being proper trained. In 1999, through Internet, we became in touch with Taras Karabuta and Elena Petrova from St-Petersburg, Russia. Soon we discovered that we shared many thoughts to be the same aboutd what a good home means, how to treat dogs in general and so on. During our contacts we also discussed the Englsih Setter breed population in Russia as well the possibilities for bird training of dogs.
In May, 2000 Elena flew over and returned home with 2 males we kept out of 2 different combination . Both dogs at the age of 17 months, offically BEAR tested normal and after we received there official Hip score for both dogs being FCI -norm B they where ready to leave for this great adventure and start their training and living with their new co-owners in Russia. Both dogs started soon with the bird training at the home of Mark and Unonu which took place in the surrounded toendra of the small village Puchinio
