Blazing Bronze pups: 6 weeks.
Last week, behavior and signals indicated that one of the puppy girls may (possibly) have a hearing problem and could be Bi-Deaf. A breeder that socializes, properly observe the pups and will always notice these signals, take action and that is exactly what happened. Unfortunately, the deafness test Brainstem Evoked Response test (BAER) revealed that this puppy is deaf, lacks any hearing. Chapeau! ..For the breeder who posted this information on his site so all interested are being fully informed. At Fanchon, we believe that a good/honest breeder and a true lover of the breed should always be open and frank about ALL the health issues and inform consequently as we have done this ourselves since starting to breed in the early 90’s and always have and will publish about this or any other malfunction disease, including all results, no exceptions, see for instance information on pages (Dutch language) Chochleaire doofheidonderzoek LINK and information, click on LINK.
"Nature has its own way”.
Both, Sire and Dam of this litter have Bi-lateral hearing and that applies also for all the siblings (we test all our puppies!) of the parents which again emphasizes how elusive this genetically inherited bad gene manifests itself within the breed! Incomprehensible that there are still “breeders” who do combinations of parents that are not BAER tested or post information with a litter born that doesn’t include information that both parental dogs are tested for deafness and found free of deafness and thus have Bi-Lateral normal hearing.
Our advice: Always ask your selected breeder about status deafness test results of male and female that are used for the breeding combination and the answer should be clear, do not settle for less. If the breeder is unable or reluctant to submit the BAER test results of both dogs or one of the dogs is posted with BAER information and the other one without a BAER test result it is very likely such a dog is not tested or was tested with outcome a Uni-Lateral deaf dog. It strongly indicates that important information is not forgotten by the "breeder" but is withheld deliberate for this reason, only!
Today, June 19, 2014, we received information that all remaining puppies have been tested. The BAER results are: 6 puppies Bi-Lateral (normal hearing), 1 pup Uni-Lateral/One-sided hearing.
